The Lord told Moses to send out spies into the land of Canaan, which He had promised to the Israelites. Moses chose one man from each of the 12 tribes, and among the chosen spies were Joshua and Caleb. Moses told the 12 spies to go and spy out the land, its inhabitants, the cities and the soil. He told them to bring back the fruit of the land. It was the season for first ripe grapes.
The spies went forth and searched the land. They came upon the brook of eshcol and cut down a cluster of grapes, and carried it on a staff between two men. They also took pomegranates and figs.
The spies returned to Moses after 40 days and showed him the fruit of the land. They reported to him about the land, its inhabitants, the cities, and said that the land flowed with milk and honey and should be conquered.
